Visiting the B&O Railroad Museum

Road to Rails Worksheet 1

1.       Locate the National Road exhibit panels in the front parking lot of the Museum. Pratt Street was once part of the National Road. How has Pratt Street changed since the mid-nineteenth century?
2.       Locate the B&O’s Railroad’s First Stone in the Museum. What does the inscription say on top of the First Stone?
3.       Locate vehicles in the Museum’s roundhouse which would have run on dirt roads instead of railroads. How many can you find?
4.       Locate the B&O Railroad’s first passenger car. What was it called? Why do you think it was called by that name? Look closely at the wheels of this car. How are these wheels different from the wheels on vehicles which ran over dirt roads? What makes railroad cars stay on the tracks
