Steam Days!

Steam Days: Relive the early days of railroading and learn about the Museum’s historic “Iron Horses.” Experience the hiss of the escaping steam and the undeniable shriek of a steam engine whistle, and the rhythmic thumping and chug, chug, chug, as an historic steam engine rolls down the tracks. On Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th bring your family down to the Museum for our annual RAILFEST: Steam Days !

Relive the early days of railroading and learn about the Museum’s historic “Iron Horses.” Experience the hiss of the escaping steam and the undeniable shriek of a steam engine whistle, and the rhythmic thumping and chug, chug, chug, as an historic steam engine rolls down the tracks.

You’ll be able to see two of the Museum’s historic steam engines operating for a weekend of excitement and entertainment! Visitors will be able to ride behind the #4 St. Elizabeth, a 1950 Porter built-saddle tank steam engine. The Museum will also be running the oldest operating steam engine in America (and museum’s resident movie star), the #25 William Mason.

Museum Programs will include:
  • Learn how a steam engine operates
  • Discover why the earliest American steam engines, like the Tom Thumb and Atlantic, were known as Grasshoppers.
  • Learn about our world class collection and unique and historic locomotives like the #592, used to pull the Royal Blue, which could reach speeds of 100 miles per hour; or the #1604 Allegheny, one of the most powerful locomotives ever built; see the sleek design of the C&O #490; see the #5300 President Washington, the only remaining engine from the B&O’s presidential series; and learn about the recently restored #57 Memnon & #147 “Thatcher Perkins!”

Be sure to bring your family down to the museum, experience a bygone era in American history, and blow off a little steam!
