Locating the Site

Map 1: Maryland, DC, and Virginia, ca. 1840

Transportation in the mid-Atlantic region took place using every available means, including roads, railroads, and waterways. The map depicts regional transportation routes available in the region by 1840 and significant geographical features that influenced the development of these routes. 
Questions for Map 1:
1.      What major geographical features do you see and how do you think they impacted the development of transportation routes in the area?
2.      Identify and locate important Maryland towns, including Baltimore, Ellicott’s Mills, and Washington DC.
3.      Identify the different transportation routes located on this map.
